The Chinatown Health Clinic Foundation gives opportunities for Asian Americans to pursue careers in health care. Visit these pages to learn more about qualifications and how to apply.

    1. Opportunities for High School Seniors

  •  a. Dr. Thomas Tam Scholarship

      Photo of Thomas Tam This scholarship was established in 2008 by the Dr. Thomas Tam Memorial Scholarship Foundation in memory of Dr. Thomas Tam, a co-founder of the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. The purpose of this scholarship is to further the mission of the Teen Resource Center (TRC) by providing financial support to the Asian American adolescent population through health education, youth program and activities and referrals.

      Scholarship recipients will receive a one-time scholarship of $500 for use at accredited universities or colleges within the US. The selection committee will select up to four recipients from all applications received.

      Eligibility Criteria


      Seniors anticipating completion of a high school diploma during the academic year in which the application is made.
      Seniors planning to pursue a degree at an accredited US post-secondary institution.
      Past recipients are not eligible.

      One essay that responds to the following questions (no more than 1,000 words, typed, 12-point font). Please include your name on all pages submitted.
      What does community mean to you?
      How have you contributed to your community? Please describe an experience of community involvement.
      How do you plan to help fulfill your community's needs after you have completed your education?
      One letter of recommendation from a former or current supervisor or teacher.

      Proof of eligible tuition or expenses will be required if you are selected.



  • 2. Opportunities for CBWCHC Staff

  •  a. Dickson Hee Scholarship

      Photo of Dickson Hee The Board of Directors of the Chinatown Health Clinic Foundation is proud to announce a scholarship program in honor of Mr. Dickson Hee, former Chair of the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. He received an MS in Biology from New York University, and MPH in Health Administration and MBA in Finance from Columbia University. He worked as a research scientist at New York University and a health care consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton and Kidder, Peabody & Co. He was also President of Hong Hop Noodle, a family owned business located in Manhattan’s Chinatown.

      The purpose of the scholarship is to provide professional development opportunities for frontline health care workers as well as paraprofessional and support staff at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. Some examples of job titles held by eligible employees include but are not limited to: patient service representatives, care managers, social work assistants, medical assistants, outreach workers, health educators, administrative assistants, family health workers, billing clerks, and facilities assistants.

      Recipients will receive a one time scholarship of up to $1,000 to participate in a training activity or program to help employees improve their skills and competencies, and move up the career ladder. Some examples of training programs that the scholarship could support include:

      English Language Training
      Preparing for the LPN licensing examination
      Phlebotomy and EKG
      Writing for Professionals
      Computer Training
      Medical Billing and Coding


      Eligibility Criteria


      Must be a full time employee of the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. Part time employees who work at least 21 hours per week are also eligible.
      Must have worked at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center for at least one year.
      Active volunteer or intern at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (must have contributed at least 200 hours of service).
      Past recipients are not eligible.

      Personal statement (no more than 2 pages, typed, double-spaced) that describes applicant’s current position, career goals, plans for using the scholarship, and how the training will improve skills and competencies for a current job, or acquire new skills in order to move up the career ladder.
      One letter of recommendation from a former or current supervisor or teacher.

      Proof of eligible tuition or expenses will be required if you are selected.


  •  b. Helen Lee Memorial Scholarship Fund

      Photo of Helen Lee The Board of Directors of the Chinatown Health Clinic Foundation is proud to announce a scholarship program funded by Mr. Ken Lee, in honor of his late wife Mrs. Helen Lee.

      The purpose of the scholarship is to provide funding for educational advancement. Recipients will receive a one time scholarship of up to $1,500 to participate in a training activity or program to help improve their skills and competencies. Some examples of educational advancements that the scholarship could support include:

      SHSAT/SAT prep
      Academic/Career/Musical enrichment courses


      Eligibility Criteria


      Must be a family member of a current Charles B. Wang Community Health Center employee. Including but not limited to: children/siblings/grandchildren.
      Must be either a high school senior and above OR a high school junior or below.
      Past recipients are not eligible.
